With activities for all ages and abilities, there’s something to spark everyone’s imagination!

Summer of the 17th Doll

An Australian theatre classic comes to life on the Red Tree stage in Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, Ray Lawler’s ground-breaking portrayal of love, loss, and the elusive nature of dreams.
Every summer for sixteen years, Queensland cane-cutters Roo and Barney have come to Melbourne for five months of revelry with barmaids Olive and Nancy. But this seventeenth summer is different. Nancy has married and left the tradition behind, replaced by the more conventional Pearl. Time has taken its toll, and long-held illusions begin to crack under the pressure of change.
Set in 1950s working-class Australia, Lawler’s play broke new ground by bringing authentic Australian voices and experiences to the stage—and continues to resonate today with its poignant themes and unforgettable characters.

Behind every civilised face, something waits, hidden, forbidden, and impossible to contain. Once it is let loose, it does not ask permission to stay.
